SECTION I - CED ACTIVITIES

CED BOARD

BOARD MEETING

On 18 September, the CED Board met in Brussels. The Board dis-cussed current work of CED Working Groups and Board Task Forces as well as the EU political developments. The Board noted the need to continue strengthening CED communications to its members and to external partners and the interest in developing cooperation with the European Dental Students’ Association (EDSA). CED WORKING GROUPS (WG)

WG Amalgam & Other Restorative Materials (A&ORM)

On 7 July, WG Chair Dr Susie Sanderson and CED Policy Officer Aleksandra Sanak attended a consultation workshop organised by the European Commission (EC) to present the draft study on the EU Implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury made by ICF International published on 18 June. The WG prepared the CED response to the draft study which was approved by the Board and sent to ICF and to the EC (DG Environment) on 31 July. Read more

WG Education and Professional Qualifications (EPQ)

On 27-30 September, WG Chair Prof Paulo Melo attended on behalf of the CED the ADEE Annual Meeting in Riga this year dedicated to “Emerging new approaches in Dental Education”.

CED and ADEE have recently published a joint position on competences which was prepared to contribute to the update of Directive 2005/36/EC as amended by Directive 2013/55/EU on the recognition of professional qualifications.

Working Group Infection Control & Waste Management (IC&WM)

On 26 September, the WG IC&WM met in Vilnius to discuss several issues related to infection control and waste management practices in EU countries (single use items, sharps protection, contamination of dental units’ waterlines and other infrastructures) and to exchange information on national legislation. The meeting was splendidly hosted by the Lithuanian Dental Chamber. CED Policy Officer Sara Roda also attended the meeting. Read more

Working Group Medical Devices (MD)

The WG prepared in cooperation with the CED WG Amalgam and Other Restorative Materials CED’s reply to the public consultation on the SCENIHR’s preliminary opinion Guidance on the determination of potential health ef-fects of nanomaterials used in medical devices. The aim of the opinion is to address the use of nanomaterials in medical devices and to provide information for risk assessors regarding specific aspects that need to be consid-ered in the safety evaluation of nanomaterials.

Working Group Oral Health (OH)

On 12 September, the CED and the International Diabetes Federation Europe celebrated the European Oral Health Day. This year’s theme focused on the theme of oral health and diabetes. The two organisations stressed that diabetes mellitus is a disease with concomitant oral manifestations that impact dental care. It is often associated with periodontal disease and studies revealed a significantly greater rate of progression of periodontal disease among people with diabetes, compared with those without. Working Group Patient Safety (PS)

The 4th coordination meeting of stakeholders involved in the Joint Action on Patient Safety and Quality of Care (PaSQ) took place on 18 - 19 September in Rome. The participants discussed the work in progress as well as the next steps that would lead towards a final report to be presented during the 5th coordination meeting on 12 – 13 March 2015 in Brussels. Working Group Tooth Whitening (TW)

On 22 July, the WG Chair Dr Stefaan Hanson and Policy Officer Sara Roda held a conference call with IADR’s Immediate Past President Dr Helen Whelton and Executive Director Christopher Fox to discuss the use of concentrations over 6% of H2O2 in tooth whitening products and exchange information on current scientific data. The WG will be meeting on-line on 10 October to follow-up on pending issues.

CED BOARD TASK FORCES (BTF)

BTF Antibiotics in Dentistry

CED, CPME (doctors) and FVE (veterinarians) are currently working together to prepare a second joint leaflet on the use of antibiotics now aimed at health professionals. The leaflet is being prepared to mark the European Antibiotic Awareness Day on 18 November and it has been developed in the framework of the “One Health” concept and aim to support Doctors, Dentists and Veterinarians in their daily practice.

BTF Communications

On 17 September, BTF Communications met in Brussels to review the current communications activities and discuss the working plan for 2015. The members noted positive reactions to the new CED website and stressed the need to become more proactive and interactive in contacts with external actors. They also agreed that there was a need to offer more support to CED members to facilitate their contacts with MEPs; additional materials will be added to the CED website and presented to members during the November General Meeting.

BTF Internal Market (IM)

On 7 July, the BTF IM met in Brussels to discuss among other Commission’s transparency exercise on access to regulated professions, VAT, General Data Protection Regulation, Joint Action on Health Workforce Planning & Forecasting and current international agreements (TTIP and TISA). They further discussed the need to update certain provisions of the CED Code of Ethics, as well as current standing issues affecting dentistry at national level, in particular the situation brought forward by the Portuguese Dental Association during the last General Meeting. BTF Liberal Professions (LP)

On 1 October, the CED Vice-President Dr Marco Landi (ANDI) participated in the meeting of the European Commission’s Working Group on Liberal Professions organised in Naples. During the conference the participants discussed the work in progress as well as the next steps of the Working Group.

CED BRUSSELS OFFICE

EDSA Meeting

On 25 August, CED Head of Office attended the annual meeting of the European Dental Students’ Association (EDSA) in Riga, Latvia where she was invited to present the CED and discuss the possibilities for closer cooperation. The student delegates were particularly interested in issues connected to free movement of dentists and development of competence-based criteria under the Professional Qualifications Directive. They showed a great amount of interest in further cooperation with the CED and EDSA President and Vice-President accepted the invitation to attend the next CED General Meeting.

CED Manifesto

In September the CED sent the CED Manifesto to the newly elected Members of the European Parliament to share with them the main EU policy issues of interest of European dentists.

Antibiotic Awareness

On 23 September, CED Head of Office Nina Bernot and Policy Officer Sara Roda met with Dr. Dominique Monnet and Giovanni Mancarella form the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to discuss the CED’s contribution to this year’s European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EEAD). The CED was invited to attend the annual EEAD event on 17 November in Stockholm and to participate in the global and European Twitter chats on 18 November. Possible cooperation on infections in dentistry was also discussed.

EMI TTIP Summit

On 2 October, the CED Policy Officer Aleksandra Sanak attended the second cycle of the European Movement International (EMI) TTIP debates, ‘TTIP: Stepping up a Gear’. The event gathered representatives of the EU institutions, the US Mission to the EU and various stakeholders. The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is currently being negotiated between the European Union and the United States. The participants discussed the state of play of TTIP negotiations as well as its impact on the civil society organisations. Several stakeholders called for more transparency and information on the negotiation process.

European Health Forum Gastein

On 1-3 October, CED Policy Officer Sara Roda attended the European Health Forum in Gastein (EHFG) at the invitation of the European Commission to participate at the roundtable workshop on Building EU health policy for the future II (Forum 2, Session 2). This session discussed the work and principles governing the functioning of the EU Scientific Committees (SC), presenting dental amalgam and fragrance allergens as the two case studies. She presented the perspective of the CED on the current risk assessment system, discussing the stakeholders’ dialogue procedures. Read more

SECTION II - CONTRIBUTIONS BY CED MEMBERS

ORAL CANCER CAMPAING IN DENMARK

In September the Danish Dental Association (DDA) launched a campaign concerning oral cancer. The reason for the campaign is the increasing number of oral cancer cases. The purpose is to raise awareness of oral cancer among both the public and dentists. Read more

SEEING YOUR DENTIST WHEN YOU HAVE CANCER – A NEW LEAFLET EXPLAINS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO SEE YOUR DENTIST IF YOU ARE DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER

Being diagnosed with cancer is a heavy blow. And within a short time many decisions have to be made regarding treatment. Why it is important to think about the health of your mouth and teeth at this very moment is explained in the new leaflet “Seeing your dentist when you have cancer. How to protect your teeth and gums during cancer treatment”. This leaflet is issued by the Cancer Information Service of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the German Dental Association (BZÄK) and the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZBV).
