CED Board meets in Brussels

CED Board of Directors met in Brussels on 20 March for a regular quarterly meeting. Directors reviewed recent EU policy developments relevant to dentists, such as the transparency exercise and mutual evaluation of regulated professions and met with representatives of European Commission's DG Growth which coordinates the initiative. CED Working Groups (WG)

WG Education discusses dental team, CPD, dental specialties

WG Education & Professional Qualifications met on 20 February in Brussels to discuss the WG activities and the latest EU developments related to the Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC). WG eHealth to focus on electronic records, mHealth

WG eHealth met on 13 February in Brussels to discuss WG activities in 2015. Among other issues, WG will focus on the overview of national laws on electronic health records and will continue to monitor developments at EU level in connection to mHealth. WG Medical Devices

WG Medical Devices met in Brussels on 20 February. WG members discussed the state of play of the revision of the medical devices legislation and the latest developments in the area of standardisation.

WG Tooth Whitening takes position on under 18's

The WG Tooth Whitening met on 27 February in Brussels to discuss the WG activities and the latest EU developments related to its remit. Among other, the WG concluded the 2nd report on undesirable effects caused by tooth whitening and bleaching products 2013-2014, discussed the risks associated with the use of whitening lamps as well as the need to inform the dental community and the public about the EU ban on borates. CED-ADEE Task Force meeting

The Task Force met on 20 February in Brussels to discuss the update of Annex 5.3.1 of Directive 2005/36/EC and the legal framework under which the European Commission is able to amend Annex 5.3.1.

CED engages with health students

Over the last few month, CED representatives attended a number of events organised by European associations of future health professionals, recognising the benefits of encouraging students to start thinking about interprofessional collaboration even before the start of their professional careers.  Read more

BTF Liberal Professions held an online meeting on 12 February to discuss latest developments regarding liberal professions at EU level. Read more

CED Code of ethics for dentists in EU revision discussed

Members of BTF Code of Ethics met in Brussels on 9 March to further discuss the future revision of the CED Code of Ethics in light of the future General Data Protection Regulation which is currently being discussed in the Council of the EU. Read more

BTF Communications discusses CED website plans

CED Board Task Force Communications met in Brussels on 20 March to review CED internal and external communications activities. They noted the preparations for the online publication of the CED 2014 Annual Report to be launched at the CED General Meeting in Riga in May and further development of the CED website as the main channel for CED communications. At the request of our members, new sections on jurisprudence and members' contributions will soon be added to the website.

BTF Internal Market discusses TTIP, common training frameworks, competition in healthcare

BTF Internal Market met on 9 March in Brussels to follow-up on the EU developments on Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the US (TTIP), common training principles under Directive 2005/36/EC, Commission’s transparency exercise and Commission’s proposal for a General Data Protection Regulation. The BTF decided to take action in several areas. Read more

EU Summit on Innovation for Active and Healthy Ageing

On 9 March, the CED Policy Officer Aleksandra Sanak attended the EU Summit on Innovation for Active and Healthy Ageing that took place on 9-10 March in Brussels. The Summit is organised by the European Commission (DG CONNECT in cooperation with RTD, SANTE and other services) together with European partners  (AGE Platform, AAL Joint Programme, European Connected Health Alliance and Knowledge for Innovation). Among the topics discussed during the Summit were: ooportunities of the silver economy, innovative ICT solutions for active and healthy ageing, more efficient health and care systems, needs of ageing population and how to improve life of citizens of all ages.

CED at Patient Safety and Quality of Care Expert Group Meeting

On 11 February, the CED Policy Officer Aleksandra Sanak attended the meeting of the European Commission's Patient Safety and Quality of Care Expert Group (PSQCEG). The participants discussed the Commission's proposals for work programme 2015 and new structure of the Group. At the request of several Member States and EU level stakeholders, the Commission was asked for further clarifications of their proposals. The meeting continued with presentations of initiatives related to the work of the Group.

CED comments on proposed changes to EU Health Policy Forum

On 19 March, CED Head of Office Nina Bernot attended a meeting of EU Health Policy Forum (EUHPF). EUHPF currently brings together 52 umbrella organisations of European health stakeholders, including the CED, and acts as a communication channel between policy makers and stakeholders, allowing the latter to contribute to development and implementation of EU health policies. During the meeting, the Commission's proposal for changes to EUHPF was discussed. Read more

CED at Joint Action on EU Health Workforce meeting in Madrid

On 23 and 24 March, the second plenary meeting of the Joint Action on EU Health Workforce Planning and Forecasting took place in Madrid. Funded by the Health Programme of the EU, the Joint Action brings together national governments and stakeholders, including the CED, to discuss the future of EU health workforce and create tools and guidance for better workforce planning and needs forecasting. CED representatives participated in the plenary discussions and in meetings of the stakeholder forum, stressing the importance of fully integrating dentists and other health professions in the processes of planning and forecasting.  Read more

CED attends meeting of European Movement International

On 5 February, CED Policy officer Sara Roda attended the meeting of the International Associations of the European Movement International (EMI). The participants exchanged information on their current activities and discussed ways of further involvement with the EMI. The Secretary General, Mr Diogo Pinto, reported on the main EMI Board decisions and, among them, the decision to establish 3 Political Committees where international associations could participate. CED continues involvement in PaSQ Joint Action

On 12-13 March, CED Head of Office Nina Bernot and CED Policy Officer Aleksandra Sanak represented the CED at the 5th coordination meeting of the Joint Action on Patient Safety and Quality of Care (PaSQ) that took place in Brussels. The objective of the meeting was to present the main outcomes of PaSQ. Read more

CED, health stakeholders ask to be included in new Joint Action on eHealth

On 27 March, CED and associations representing European patients, doctors, pharmacists and hospitals met with Director Dr. Andrzej Rys  and responsible officials of DG SANTE to express an interest in participation in the future Joint Action on eHealth. Commission interlocutors confirmed their support for stakeholders' involvement. Read more

German dental system provides first class dental care and is crisis-proof, says study

Berlin, 3 March 2015 – A comparison of European dental systems shows that Germany not only provides first class dental care but also that its dental system is currently crisis-proof in terms of health economics. These are the conclusions of a study of selected dental treatment scenarios within Europe from a health economics perspective. The results have been published today by the German Dental Association (Bundeszahnärztekammer  - BZÄK), the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (Kassenzahnärztlichen Bundesvereinigung - KZBV) and the Institute of German Dentists (Institut der Deutschen Zahnärzte - IDZ).
