Dear CED Members and partners,

Welcome to the first edition of the CED newsletter in 2016 which is also the first edition issued during my presidency. I look forward to fruitful collaboration with you during the next 3 years; judging by the first few months, they will be both an interesting and a challenging time for European dentists. Read more

CED AND ADEE REINFORCE COOPERATION ON ETHICS

On 26 January, CED President Dr. Marco Landi and the President of the ADEE Prof. Dr. Corrado Paganelli met in Brussels. They discussed different areas of collaboration between the two organisations. Ethics was singled out as an issue of particular importance. For further information please see the CED Press release. Read more

Working Groups

Working Group Oral Health focuses on antimicrobial resistance and sugar in 2016

Working Group met on 21 January and discussed its activities in 2016. The main focus of their work will be antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and sugar. The Working Group discussed the preparation and organisation of a public event on AMR which is scheduled to take place in June. It has also been agreed that this year's European Oral Health Day will be on the same topic. The CED already adopted a resolution on AMR in 2014 which focused on responsible use of antibiotics in dentistry and on dentists' role in combating antimicrobial resistance. Read more

Working Group eHealth meets with DG SANTE

Working Group met on 29 January in Brussels to discuss WG activities in 2016. During the meeting the Working Group met with Dr. Andrzej Rys, Director in the European Commission's Directorate General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE). Dr. Rys gave a presentation on DG SANTE's activities in the areas of eHealth and mHealth. His presentation was followed by a discussion on the possibilities of cooperation Read more

CED opposes standardisation of healthcare

On 12 February, Dr Stefaan Hanson (member of the CED Working Group Medical Devices) and Sara Roda (CED Senior Policy Officer) attended a meeting of the CEN SAGS-ABHS Ad-hoc group on healthcare services. The meeting was dedicated to the discussion of the draft CEN strategy for healthcare services standards which is expected to be finalised very soon. As part of the strategy, a template for future standards is being prepared which National Standard Bodies or European Standard Organisations (e.g. CEN) could use when developing a European standard for a healthcare service. The CED is against standardisation of delivery of healthcare (see CED Resolution on Standardisation of Healthcare, May 2015). Read more

ced working groups and task forces welcome new members

CED Working Groups and Task Forces welcomed a number of new members during the last few months, showing that their work is increasingly more relevant and interesting for CED associations. CED Working Groups and Task Forces cover specific areas of interest for European dentists and are charged with drafting CED policy for eventual adoption by the General Meeting. Currently, 8 Working Groups and 5 Task Forces are active in the CED.

Section 2 - Contributions by CED Members

Traditional and novel approaches for oral health promotion in Finland

The constitution of the Finnish Dental Association (FDA) includes an obligation to promote oral health among the population. For this purpose the FDA has a working group on health promotion (OHP). For the same reason it has also employed a part-time consultant. Their task is to keep an eye on developments that might affect the oral health of the population and to prepare appropriate actions to tackle them. Keeping in touch with different public organizations and serving the media in oral health related matters are other important tasks. Read more

Women's leadership as means for sustainable change

In 2014 a small group of female members of the Irish Dental Association met to establish a new group - Women in Dentistry Network. The core mission was to facilitate networking  and encourage greater participation in the Association of female members, particularly in taking up leadership roles. The inspiration came from having attended the Women in Dentistry Worldwide session at FDI Istanbul, particularly from the encouragement given by Dr. Michele Aerden, and previous experience of successful  businesswomen’s networking models.
