CED AND IDF EUROPE CELEBRATE EUROPEAN ORAL HEALTH DAY: ORAL HEALTH AND DIABETES

Press release of 12 September 2014

The Council of European Dentists (CED) and the International Diabetes Federation Europe (IDF Europe) are pleased to celebrate 12 September, the European Oral Health Day.

On the occasion of the European Oral Health Day, the two organisations stress that diabetes mellitus is a disease with concomitant oral manifestations that impact dental care. It is often associated with periodontal disease and studies revealed a significantly greater rate of progression of periodontal disease among people with diabetes, compared with those without.

Globally, it is expected that the number of people with diabetes will increase from 382 million in 2013 to 592 million by the year 2035; in Europe, the projected increase will be from 56 million to 70 million by 2035. However, public awareness of how to prevent oral disease in people living with diabetes remains rather poor. As the number of people with diabetes is set to continue rising over the coming years, dentists can play an important role in early diagnosis and in helping people with diabetes manage their condition properly. As they see patients on a regular basis, dentists can refer them to a medical doctor or endocrinologist for further consultation when they identify diabetes symptoms.
