Today, the CED President Dr. Marco Landi and the President of the ADEE Prof. Dr. Corrado Paganelli met in Brussels. They discussed different areas of collaboration between the two organisations. Ethics was singled out as an issue of particular importance.
European dentists first agreed on a CED Code of Ethics in 1965. Since then, the Code was revised in 1965, 1982, 1998, 2002 and 2007. Currently, the Code is being revised taking into consideration changes to the national codes of ethics of dentists since the last revision and the newly agreed EU General Data Protection Regulation, provisions of which are expected to be applied from early 2018.
The ADEE is working on a Learning Outcomes document on Ethics, Law and Professionalism in European Dental Undergraduate Curriculum within its Special Interest Group. The chair of the CED Working Group Education and Professional Qualifications, Prof. Dr. Paulo Melo attended the meeting of the ADEE Special Interest Group during the 41th ADEE Annual Meeting in Szeged on 26 – 29 August 2015. He welcomed a reference to the CED Code of Ethics in the ADEE document. Prof. Dr. Melo stressed that the CED Code of Ethics reflects the consensus of European dentists and encouraged European dental educators to include it in the dental students’ study materials.
The CED and the ADEE look forward to further cooperation on this very important issue for the dental profession.
The Council of European Dentists (CED) is a European not-for-profit association which represents over 340,000 practising dentists through 32 national dental associations and chambers from 30 European countries. Its key objectives are to promote high standards of oral healthcare and effective patient-safety centred professional practice across Europe, including through regular contacts with other European organisations and EU institutions.
