Meeting with EU Health Commissioner

On 28 January 2015, CED President Dr Wolfgang Doneus met, together with the CPME President Dr Katrín Fjeldsted, the new European Commissioner for Health Dr Vytenis Andriukaitis. Commissioner Andriukaitis, a surgeon by training and a former Lithuanian Health Minister, stressed the importance he will assign during his mandate to working with health professions and other stakeholders.

He confirmed that he will work very closely with his colleague Commissioner Bienkowska on EU policy in the area of medical devices; the portfolio was moved from DG SANTÉ (former DG SANCO) and CED and CPME were among the stakeholders who protested against the move.

The Commissioner expressed an understanding of the concerns of CED and CPME related to attempts to develop standards on delivery of healthcare at EU level. As CED President stressed, just like patients, treatments cannot be standardised but should be guided by the expertise and professional ethics of the health professional.

Other topics discussed included eHealth, health workforce issues and antimicrobial resistance; all agreed that these were areas where dentists and doctors can continue to make a substantial contribution.
