According to a decision by the Council of the European Union on 20 September 2011, the use of tooth whitening products containing more than 0.1% of hydrogen peroxide will only be allowed after clinical examination and first treatment by a dentist. The CED welcomed the decision as an important step towards ensuring patient safety and removing any uncertainty as to how or by whom tooth whitening should be performed in the EU.
